Some Croom family lore states that James Frederick CROOM was born about 1783 in Dobbs County, NC, the son of Major CROOM, I, and his second wife, Susannah HARDEE ENLOE, widow of Abraham ENLOE. To my knowledge, no record, document or concurrent family bible entry corroborates this assertion. Even circumstantial evidence is lacking. The only hint of a clue lies in the 1790 Dobbs County Census that shows an unidentified free white male under 16 years of age in the household of Major CROOM, I. Please refer to the page entitled  FREDERICK CROOM, A CASE FOR HIS BEING A DESCENDANT OF ABEL CROOM, for my reasoning as to why I believe the Croom family lore is WRONG and that FREDERICK CROOM likely was a son of MAJOR ASA CROOM, a son of MAJOR, who was a son of ABEL CROOM. Furthermore, it appears that FREDERICK was orphaned at an early age and possibly was raised by his 1st cousin, JOHN CROOM (b 1764), a son of JESSE CROOM, who was a son of ABEL CROOM.

Records reflecting on Frederick's life as a youth are not known to this writer. The earliest record of his life known to me indicates that he served in Nixon's Company in New Hanover County during the War of 1812. Other early records show that he purchased land and paid property taxes in the same county in 1815. According to The CROOM Family by Doris CROOM OUTLAW, he married Rebecca MALPASS. My research of both the CROOM and MALPASS families confirms that Rebecca was the wife of Frederick CROOM and that she was the daughter of a James  MALPASS. Frederick died in 1852 and Rebecca died shortly after the 1870 census, both in New Hanover County.

 

In 1840 JAMES MALPASS was living in the household of his son-in-law, FREDERICK CROOM. REBECCA and an unidentified female, are listed in the census as between 40 & 50 years of age. There are 2 young boys and a girl, age 10-15 also in the household. It is my speculation that the unidentified woman is most likely a daughter or daughter-in-law of JAMES MALPASS, and the unidentified youngsters are his grandchildren. In 1840, none of FREDERICK'S sons or daughters was old enough to have a 10-15 year-old daughter.

      Sometime in the late 1890s, Joseph and his brother, James Allen, left Pender County, NC, and moved to Mississippi to found a turpentine business. James Allen would become the progenitor of a significant branch of CROOM families in Mississippi and adjacent states. Between 1900 and 1904, their half-brother, Henry Baxter CROOM, would move first to Vernon Parish, LA, and later to Greene Co, MS, where he too would expand the CROOM families in that area.

  5. William L CROOM (Frederick, Major Asa, Major, Abel, Daniel) VERY SPECULATIVE, b abt 1827 NC, d aft 1880, m 10 Feb 1850 Monroe Co, GA, Ann E. RUSSELL; family living in Monroe Co, GA, in 1880; 2 daus & 1 son. {NOTE: This writer believes WILLIAM, while in his teens, accompanied his older cousins, JOHN and JESSE, both sons of JOHN CROOM (b1764), and their respective families to Georgia between 1840 and 1850. JOHN lived for a short time in  Houston County before moving his family to Jackson County, FL, between 1850 and 1860. JESSE and WILLIAM settled in Monroe County, GA, before 1850. There, WILLIAM married in 1850. Studies continue to determine if this WILLIAM was a son of another New Hanover County Croom.

  6. Ann "Annie" J. CROOM (Frederick, Major Asa, Major, Abel, Daniel), b 1829; m 26 May 1852 NH Co. Joseph B. PIGFORD.

  7. Mary Elizabeth "Betsy" CROOM (Frederick, Major Asa, Major, Abel, Daniel), b 1835; m 27 Dec 1857 NH Co. William Thomas PINER. There issue (there may have been others):

    1. George Franklin PINER, b 11 Sep 1867 NHC, d 3 Jan 1943, m 23 Oct 1895 in Watha, NC, Della Francis KING. At least one son.

My studies of the 1820 and 1830 censuses for Frederick CROOM indicate an unidentified male living in the household. I have studied Jesse CROOM and William L. CROOM, both of whom moved from NC to Monroe County, GA about 1845.  Both Jesse and William respectively married in Monroe County and lived there for a number of years. So far, I have not been able to place either of these men with families back in NC.

If you have any information which can add siblings to the above listed CROOM families, provide corrections, or fill in missing dates and places, I would be quite pleased to hear from you.
